TRURO CATHEDRAL 125th ANNIVERSARY 1877 -2002
GRANTING OF THE CHARTER TO THE CITY OF TRURO On Wednesday 28th August 2002 Truro celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the Granting of the Charter to the City of Truro on 28th August 1877. This was marked with a Service of Thanksgiving in Truro Cathedral followed by a Reception at the Municipal Buildings by invitation of the Mayor of Truro and the City Council. An impressive procession of Civic Dignitaries attended the occasion as well as Representatives from numerous activities within the City to fully reflect the Truro community. As part of that community, the Truro Bridge Club were represented by Harold Payne, Chairman : Margaret Warner, Hon. Treasurer : June Fitness, Hon Secretary and Anthony Fitness. In our resplendent Cathedral, the Dean led Proceedings and welcomed the congregation, who enjoyed a well orchestrated service of hymns and prayers. Also a number of clergy and dignitaries made presentations depicting the last 125 years and artefacts were on display with the Charter to symbolise this historic period in Cornwall. As the congregation departed the Cathedral, the Bells rang out over the City. A "Roll of Honour" to commemorate this Anniversary was unveiled at the Reception. The BBC film crew were much in evidence, but sadly they could not capture us all in the limited slot available that evening on the BBC local news !!!
